Progress is relative

One day, I imagined Darwin ordering the cheapest monkey costume he could find online, putting it on, and heading into the jungle. This gave birth to Charles, an ironic skit that inverts evolutionary hierarchies, where man finds himself ridiculed by monkeys. It's an open reflection on the relativity of progress, a theme I find more relevant than ever.

The artwork is completed by the viewer; the characters' gazes unmistakably invite them to step into the scene, to be part of the group, to smile in amusement, and also to reflect on their own relationship with progress.

Materials

For this piece, I exclusively used professional, top-quality materials. It's rendered on 1,8 mm Clairfontaine Pastelmat paper, selected for its ideal texture. I applied colors with soft pastels and pastel pencils from renowned brands: Sennelier, Blockx, Rembrandt, Faber-Castell Pitt, and Stabilo Carbothello. All pigments are premium and highly light-resistant, ensuring the artwork's enduring vibrancy.
